Parking ticket scam

Learn more about parking ticket scams, why they're so convincing, and what can happen next.

The shock is usually followed by anger and annoyance. The frustration of what has happened causes an immediate reaction. It’s that reaction which leaves many people vulnerable.

It’s not always just the parking ticket; it’s the other things too. The children, the bags of shopping, the rain or the beating down sun – all causing a distress that forces a reaction that usually results in wanting to know just how much the fine is for.

Whether it’s a small or large amount – that never worries the scammer. All they want from you are your payment and personal details. And because the parking ticket has caused you to react negatively, the scammer knows you’ll likely want it to go away.

Whether it be the initial annoyance, the self-directed anger that you made a mistake or the embarrassment of receiving the ticket so obviously stuck to your windscreen, payment is usually forthcoming. And the scammer knows this.

But how? Well because the instructions are clear; either scan the QR Code to make payment or go to the operators website and enter your credit card details on their payment portal. All of it looks safe, professional and despite possible warning signs, it offers a way out and a chance to forget the entire ordeal.

And that’s where the problems start – right there. The point where nothing is assessed, nothing is checked, no review of what is written no moment to think if this could not be real. Just an assumption that’s the only option for it to go away.

This is why it’s important to pause – right at the start something different, challenging, negative or positive happens. Pausing creates the chance to think about the situation. It gives you the time to think whether it’s correct, applicable, or necessary. Were you really expecting a parking ticket? Had you really not read the signs? Has this happened before and do you really need to pay it?

If you take a moment to pause, it gives you time to think. Thinking helps to make the right decision. Making the right decision, with confidence, helps to protect your private information.

The next time you receive any type of fine; listen to the voice inside your head. Is it saying something doesn’t feel right?

To help, always remember to Pause – Think – Decide every single time. You’re in control. So, always do all you can to stop the criminal from making you just another victim.
