Toll fee scam

Learn more about toll fee scams, why they're so convincing, and what can happen next.

Whether it’s a text message, a WhatsApp message or an email or voice message, the idea of an outstanding balance and the consequences that proceed it can be a worrying shock.

The fear that you made a mistake, the consequences of the mistake and now the outstanding payment all combine to cause a reaction which the scammer is hoping you make without a second thought.

Whether it be the initial annoyance, the self-directed anger that you made a mistake or the embarrassment of receiving the notice of an outstanding fee , payment is usually forthcoming. And the scammer knows this.

But how? Well because the instructions are clear; just click on a link to go straight to the website to enter your credit card details. All of it looks safe, professional and despite possible warning signs, it offers a way out and a chance to forget the entire ordeal.

And that’s where the problems start - right there. The point where nothing is assessed, nothing is checked, no review of what is written in the message, no moment to think if this could be a simple mistake. Just an assumption that’s the only option for it to go away.

This is why it’s important to pause – right at the start something different, challenging, negative or positive happens. Pausing creates the chance to think about the situation. It gives you the time to think whether it’s correct, applicable, or necessary. Were you really expecting a parking ticket? Had you really not read the signs? Has this happened before and do you really need to pay it?

If you take a moment to pause, it gives you time to think. Thinking helps to make the right decision. Making the right decision, with confidence, helps to protect your private information.

The next time you are contacted by a stranger, without warning; listen to the voice inside your head. Is it saying something doesn’t feel right?

To help, always remember to Pause – Think – Decide every single time. You’re in control. So, always do all you can to stop the criminal from making you just another victim.
